Before You Take Senna Leaves

Do not take Senna Leaves if you:

  • Are allergic or hypersensitive to Senna Leaves.
  • Have severe dehydration.
  • Have blockage or narrowing of the gastro-intestinal tract or bowel.
  • Have paralysis or lack of muscle tone in the bowel.
  • Have appendicitis or inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
  • Have persistent or undiagnosed abdominal complaints, nausea, vomiting, or pain.
  • Have faecal impaction, rectal bleeding, or blood in stools without a known cause.
  • Have already taken a laxative and are still constipated.
  • Have had a sudden change in bowel habit lasting more than 2 weeks.
  • Have a kidney or heart condition.
  • Are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • Are under 12 years of age.

Food, Drink & Medicines

Maintain adequate fluid intake while taking this medicine. Drink plenty of water and follow a balanced diet containing fibre, such as whole grain breads, cereals, bran, fruit, and green leafy vegetables.

Consult your doctor before use if you take medicines for heart conditions, antiarrhythmic medicinal products, diuretics, adrenocorticosteroids, liquorice root preparations, or medicines that may prolong QT.

How To Use Senna Leaves

Adults and Elderly

Soak 5 to 10 grams Senna Leaves in a glass of cold water for about four hours and drink at bedtime.

Children Over 12 Years

Soak only 3 or 4 grams Senna Leaves and drink at bedtime. A little sugar may be added.

Children Under 12 Years

Not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

  • Do not exceed the stated dose.
  • The correct individual dose is the smallest dose that produces a soft formed motion.
  • Use for more than 1 to 2 weeks requires medical supervision.
  • Normally it is sufficient to take this medicinal product two to three times a week, or as advised by a qualified healthcare professional.

If You Take Too Much

Taking too much Senna Leaves or taking it for too long may be harmful. It may lead to lazy bowel, imbalance of fluid and salts, low potassium levels, dehydration, headache, thirst, faintness, and reduced urination.

If you miss a dose, take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take double the dose.

Possible Side Effects

Senna Leaves may cause stomach pain, spasms, and diarrhoea, particularly in patients with irritable colon. Chronic use may lead to albuminuria, haematuria, urine discolouration, or pigmentation of the gastrointestinal tract. Allergic reactions may also occur.
